'NIGHTMARES IN GLASS'

Final year collection for my BSc Textile Design & Design Management course at the University of Manchester. Completed May 2015.

S/S 16

'Nightmares In Glass' is the collection of printed, knitted and hand crochet fabrics I produced for my final year design project. My concept was an investigation into a modern and culturally relevant way to represent the traditional aesthetics and ideals of stained glass. This collection was inspired by a trip to Salisbury Cathedral and an already established love of the medium, and gothic architecture as a whole. I tried to use lacey, knitted structures to mimic the structured, ornate lead lines and frames and my printed textiles to convey the imagery of my theme. I wanted to use the religious mythology of stained glass to mean something relevant today and so I went with the theme of consumerism as a religion, icons of consumer culture as saints and models as modern 'Madonna's.

Market

This collection was designed with the S/S 16 season in mind and I studied trends of this season when producing my designs. I discovered a trend in 'Disrupted Classicism' and used this as a basis to my fabrics. The market I had in mind for my pieces is Womenswear, aged 20-30, for a premium high street retailer or boutique.

Sample Designs

I produced a series of preliminary A3 digitally created sample designs during the development of my collection and experimented with embellishment and chemical processes and the appearance of digital printing on different fabrics. These included embroidery, beading, devore and screen printing. These samples allowed me to get a new perspective on my collection and to see the bigger picture, ensuring my fabrics were succesful. These designs were a lot more obviously computer generated and from this point, in response to a 'hand drawn aesthetic' being a big part of the trend for this season I altered my designs to look a lot more illustrated.
